As I travel to teach, coach and speak, I hear some of the most amazing stories about how life is for people. Though I share a greatness and passion message, I more often hear that life and work are “4-letter words.” Each is a struggle. Each is less than they would like. They seem to be going through the motions to just get through the day instead of finding the joy, the fun and what makes life great.
They openly tell me that life is serious, dangerous and scary. It can be. So I remind them that it can also be amazing, exciting and awesome. And the difference between the two is how we choose to show up to it and be part of it.
So to shift out of danger mode into great-life mode, consider these three actions:
1. Be kind. Even to the unkind. Kindness is about realizing that there is greatness in all of us – and each of us deserves to be treated as valuable and worth it, even if some times we don’t behave like it. Kindness is intentional – it is a choice. In kindness mode, we bring the best of us to each situation. We listen more intently. We connect more honestly. We show up more authentically. The amazing thing about kindness is that when it happens, both sides benefit. We feel it. They feel it. Greatness starts with kindness.
2. Dream, then act on your dreams. In his book Infinite Possibilities author Mike Dooley, identifies that our dreams are our connection to our inner and greater self. They guide us to follow things that connect with our best or greatest abilities, and provide the energy and fuel to live large – to play full out in life. Dreams create the vision – then we must turn the vision into action. One small step each day for a month puts you 30 steps into achieving a dream Don’t wait. Don’t overthink it. Just start.Dreams – good. Dreams in motion – priceless.
3. Find what fits you – then go out and do it or be it (regardless what others say). Ever put on a shirt or a dress that didn’t fit you well? It looked great on the rack but not on you; it was too full on the sides and too tight in the shoulders – it was obviously made for someone else. Life is like that. We frequently build our lives around what others do, and where and how they live. And then we find life isn’t so great. This is because we are living someone else’s definition of a great life. Instead, ask yourself these questions: What am I great at? What am I passionate about? What matters to me? Use your answers to build a life that fits you. We were born as originals; stop trying to be a copy.
You choose how you show up to each event in your life. You can listen to others and think that things are tough, mean and upsetting. Or, you can remember that a great life is one that fits you. And the more you customize it around your talents, strengths and passions, the more you see opportunities in each day to celebrate, be happy and think life is great.
Great news should always be shared and discovering your own ways to create a great life is great news. Please share this with people who can benefit from it.
