There is so much “averageness” around us. The Gallup Organization shares an alarming statistic that 56% of employees do just enough so they don’t get fired (I am sure you know some of these – and could you be one?). So many people do just enough at work, in their lives, in their relationships and in their communities.
So, how do we move out of average – towards great- towards amazing? We make a daily commitment to just be better.
There are few people in life who hit it big – who become the X Factor choice or a lottery winner. Most of us, however, build lives that get better by paying attention to the small things in life– building relationships, developing work habits or learning about ourselves. No great fanfare. No great applause. No story in the paper. Just a happier life. Just a more authentic life. Just a better you.
Over the next 30 days, build a habit of doing one thing each day to make yourself better. It can be in work, in your relationships, in your community or in how you appreciate who you are and your unique abilities. Here are some ideas:
• Write Be Better on a Post-it note and leave it on your fridge, bathroom mirror, computer screen, desk at work, on your steering wheel – or wherever you will see it first thing each morning. Make a daily commitment to be better.
• Concentrate on being present and available in your relationships – really listen.
• Increase what you read and expand what you learn.
• Start a journal and get connected to what you feel and think.
• Start recycling.
• Be honest, open and kind.
• Eat right, healthy and properly.
• Manage your spending.
• Accept whatever happens in your day as an opportunity to improve or shine.
Small steps. A little at a time. No fanfare. No headlines. Just a commitment to make improvements – a commitment to be better in all things we do. Better at work. Better at home. Better in the community. Better with our planet.
With all that life can be, average is one thing it should never be. The way to move from average to amazing in 2012 starts with a commitment to being just a bit better every day. This changes everything.
